How to Estimate Annual Income From Hourly Pay

Turn your hourly rate into a reliable annual income estimate for budgeting, taxes, and loan applications.

The standard formula

Converting hourly pay to annual income requires three numbers: your hourly rate, your typical hours per week, and how many weeks per year you work. Multiply them together.

The standard full-time assumption: 40 hours per week x 52 weeks = 2,080 hours per year. If you earn $22/hr at a full-time schedule, your gross annual income is $22 x 2,080 = $45,760.

This is a gross income estimate, what you earn before taxes and deductions. Your actual take-home will be lower. But the annual gross figure is the number most financial systems, lenders, and tax forms ask for.

Adjusting for your actual schedule

The 2,080-hour standard does not fit everyone. If your schedule differs, the adjustment is simple: replace the hours or weeks in the formula with your actual numbers.

Part-time: If you work 30 hours per week, use 30 instead of 40. At $20/hr, that is 30 x 52 x $20 = $31,200 per year, significantly different from the full-time estimate.

Unpaid time off: If you take two weeks of unpaid vacation or sick leave, use 50 weeks instead of 52. At $22/hr full-time: 40 x 50 x $22 = $44,000, which is $1,760 less than the standard estimate.

Seasonal work: Multiply by the actual number of weeks you work. A seasonal job at $25/hr for 28 weeks generates $25 x 40 x 28 = $28,000, not the $52,000 implied by the full-year standard.

Example: $22/hr, full-time with two weeks unpaid leave

Hourly rate: $22

Hours per week: 40

Weeks worked: 50 (52 minus 2 weeks unpaid vacation)

Annual gross income: $22 x 40 x 50 = $44,000

vs. the full 52-week standard: $22 x 2,080 = $45,760

The $1,760 difference represents the cost of unpaid time off, real money when comparing against a salaried role that includes paid vacation.

Accounting for overtime

If you regularly work more than 40 hours per week, overtime pay increases your annual income above the straight-time estimate. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5x for most non-exempt workers under the FLSA.

At $20/hr working 45 hours per week (5 hours of overtime): Regular weekly pay is $20 x 40 = $800. Overtime is $20 x 1.5 x 5 = $150. Total weekly is $950. Annual total is $950 x 52 = $49,400, about $7,800 more than the no-overtime estimate of $41,600.

Why hourly workers need an annual number

Salaried employees have their annual income stated explicitly on offer letters, tax documents, and payroll systems. Hourly workers often have to calculate it themselves, and several important financial processes require it.

Tax filing: Your annual W-2 will show your total wages, but estimating your annual income mid-year helps you check that the right amount is being withheld. Under- or over-withholding can mean a surprise tax bill or a large refund that could have been invested instead.

Loan and mortgage applications: Lenders ask for annual gross income. Using your hourly rate and hours, you can calculate this accurately rather than guessing. Be prepared to show recent pay stubs or an employer letter to verify the number.

Rental applications: Many landlords require income to be 2.5 to 3 times the monthly rent. If you earn $20/hr full-time ($41,600/year, $3,467/month), you can qualify for a rental of up to $1,155 to $1,385/month under a 3x rule.

Budgeting: Monthly budgets are easier to build with an annual income baseline. Divide your annual gross by 12 to get a monthly average, then use take-home pay estimates for the actual spending plan.

Gross annual income vs what you actually keep

The annual income from the hourly formula is your gross amount, before federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state taxes, and any benefit deductions. The money you actually spend is your net (take-home) income.

For a rough estimate: hourly workers at full-time income levels typically keep 72 to 80% of their gross pay after taxes, depending on their state and filing status. At $41,600 gross ($20/hr full-time), take-home pay might be approximately $33,000 to $35,000 per year in a moderate-tax state, or about $2,750 to $2,900 per month.
